After the HPV vaccine came out, many authoritative departments recommended that boys should also be vaccinated. These recommendations are mainly from the perspective of two-way protection, because when the proportion of girls vaccinated with HPV vaccine is insufficient, vaccinating a certain proportion of boys will greatly increase the prevention effect of the population.

In October 2011, the US CDC expert committee recommended that boys be vaccinated at the age of 11 to 12. Boys aged 13 to 21 who have passed this age but have not been vaccinated or have not received three doses of the vaccine are also recommended to be vaccinated. Currently, there are not many countries that have approved HPV vaccines for male immunization programs, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Korea.

Is the HPV vaccine effective for men?

HPV also carries the risk of anal and penile cancer in men, which, while rare, still worries me.

The answer is complicated. Since 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that men be vaccinated at ages 11-21 (for certain high-risk groups, the age limit is 26).

But there's a problem. It's estimated that by the time a sexually active person is about 45, 80 percent of them have been exposed to HPV. In most people, the virus goes away on its own after two years. For men, there's no commercial way to test whether you're infected; women can get tested with a Pap test.

80% of sexually active young people, that sounds bad. But there is a silver lining: There are dozens of types of HPV that can infect the genital area, only a small fraction of which cause cancer or warts, and the latest version of the vaccine protects against nine types of HPV—the nine that are responsible for the vast majority of HPV-related problems.

Men can get HPV vaccine

Vaccination is available. The 4-valent and 9-valent HPV vaccines are recommended, which can prevent anal cancer, penile cancer and genital warts.

However, most countries and official documents of the World Health Organization do not recommend HPV vaccination for men, because the benefit for men is mainly the prevention of genital warts, which are not fatal; there is currently no evidence that male vaccination will help prevent cervical cancer in women.
