Is it normal for an adult man to have nocturnal emissions?

Many of you first came across the term "sleepless" in biology class. Sleepless is a normal physiological phenomenon. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, sleepless is only considered sleepless if it occurs with a dream. If it occurs without a dream, it is called spermatorrhea. The occurrence of spermatorrhea will affect kidney function. If you have kidney deficiency or heart-kidney disharmony, you may experience spermatorrhea.

Spermia refers to the spontaneous leakage of semen without sexual intercourse. It can be physiological or pathological. In traditional Chinese medicine, the phenomenon of spontaneous leakage of semen is called spermatorrhea or spermatorrhea. If semen is leaked during a dream, it is called dream leakage. If semen is leaked without a dream or even when awake, it is called spermatorrhea.

Spermatorrhea is mostly caused by kidney deficiency, weak sperm gate, or heart-kidney disharmony, or damp heat. In Western medicine, it can be seen in phimosis, prepuce hyperplasia, urethritis, prostate disease, etc. Nocturnal emission is often the initial stage of waking spermatorrhea. Nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea are two different symptoms of spermatorrhea with different severity.

1. Psychological spermatorrhea

Healthy young men, without a normal sexual climax, usually ejaculate once every few weeks or months. This is a manifestation of the overflow of semen, which is a physiological ejaculation. It usually refers to the spontaneous leakage of semen without sexual intercourse or sexual stimulation, which often occurs during sleep. This situation may occur from adolescence to old age. Therefore, married middle-aged men do not need to worry too much and can face it calmly. Spermia during sleep is often accompanied by dreams of sexual intercourse between men and women, also known as somnolence, and some people call it horse racing. The spontaneous leakage of semen at night without dreams is called spermatorrhea.

For men who grow and develop normally, the two testicles keep producing sperm and the seminal vesicles keep secreting semen. Soon the seminal vesicles are full, so the body will automatically make adjustments and discharge the semen. It's like a cup full of water, and if you pour more water into it, it will naturally overflow. Sometimes, overheated bedding and tight underwear can irritate the penis and cause spermatorrhea. These are all physiological phenomena, and can also be said to be part of human sexual physiology.

2. Pathological spermatorrhea

True pathological nocturnal emission means that a man may ejaculate several times a week or several times a night, or even when he has a sexual thought while awake, or he may ejaculate frequently even when he has a normal sexual life. This may cause a decline in semen quality and even sexual dysfunction. If a man has frequent nocturnal emission accompanied by mental fatigue, sore waist and knees, ringing ears, dizziness, fatigue, and other symptoms, and it affects his work and study, he should seek medical attention immediately. Excessive masturbation can also cause nocturnal emission, which is also an abnormal phenomenon and is not good for physical and mental health in the long run.

Common causes of pathological spermatorrhea in adult men include mental factors, physical weakness, local lesions, premature ejaculation, impotence, prostate disease, etc., which require timely treatment.
