When a part of our body itches, we scratch it to stop the itching. However, for itching caused by certain diseases, scratching may not solve the problem. For example, some people in life have symptoms of vascular itching. What is going on? Experts point out that this symptom is likely to be vascular neuroedema.

What is vascular edema?

Vascular edema, also known as angioneurotic edema and giant urticaria, involves the deep layers of the skin (including subcutaneous tissue), often occurring in loose areas of the skin, causing localized edema.

Causes

The causes of vascular edema are similar to those of urticaria. Common causes include: food and food additives; inhalation; infection; drugs; physical factors such as mechanical stimulation, heat and cold, sunlight, etc.; insect bites; mental factors and endocrine changes; genetic factors, etc. Hereditary vascular edema is caused by the reduction and inactivity of C1 esterase inhibitor levels in the blood and tissues.

Clinical manifestations

It is acute localized edema, which often occurs in loose tissues, such as eyelids, lips, foreskin and extremities, scalp, auricle, oral mucosa, tongue, and throat. The skin is tense and shiny, with unclear boundaries, light red or pale white, soft in texture, and non-concave edema. The patient does not feel itchy or it is mild, or there is numbness and swelling. The swelling disappears after 2 to 3 days, or lasts longer, leaving no trace after disappearing. It occurs alone or repeatedly in the same part, often accompanied by urticaria. When vascular edema occurs in the laryngeal mucosa, there is shortness of breath, discomfort in the throat, hoarseness, difficulty breathing, and even the possibility of suffocation. Generally, there are no systemic symptoms.
