Metronidazole is commonly used in clinical practice for pelvic and digestive tract infections, and it is also particularly effective in the treatment of trichomoniasis. So, what diseases can metronidazole treat?

What does metronidazole treat?

Metronidazole has a broad spectrum of anti-anaerobic and antiprotozoal effects and is mainly used to prevent and treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, such as respiratory tract, digestive tract, abdominal and pelvic infections, infections of the skin, soft tissues, bones and joints, as well as endocarditis, brain abscess, septicemia and meningitis caused by Pseudomonas fragilis. It is also widely used to prevent and treat oral anaerobic infections.

Metronidazole tablets are taken as follows:

1. Common dosage for adults.

(1) For intestinal amebiasis, take 0.4-0.6 g at a time, 3 times a day, for 7 days. For extraintestinal amebiasis, take 0.6-0.8 g at a time, 3 times a day, for 20 days.

(2) For giardiasis, take 0.4 g at a time, 3 times a day, for 5 to 10 days.

(3) For medinaphiliasis, 0.2 g at a time, 3 times a day, for 7 days.

(4) For balacteriosis, take 0.2 g at a time, twice a day, for 5 days.

(5) For cutaneous leishmaniasis, 0.2 g each time, 4 times a day, for a course of 10 days. Repeat the course of treatment after an interval of 10 days.

(6) For trichomoniasis, take 0.2 g at a time, 4 times a day, for 7 days. You can also use suppositories at the same time, insert 0.5 g into the vagina every night for 7 to 10 days.

(7) For anaerobic infection, take orally 0.6-1.2 g per day, divided into 3 doses. One course of treatment is 7-10 days.

2. Common dosage for children.

(1) For amebiasis, take 35-50 mg/kg of body weight orally three times a day. One course of treatment is 10 days.

(2) For giardiasis, take 15-25 mg/kg of body weight orally three times a day for 10 consecutive days. The dosage for the treatment of medinal nematode disease, bagworm disease, and trichomoniasis is the same as that for giardiasis.

(3) For anaerobic infections, take orally 20-50 mg/kg per day based on body weight.
