The common course of a stiff neck is that there are no symptoms before going to bed, but after getting up in the morning, you feel obvious pain in the neck and back, and your neck movements are limited. This means that the disease starts after sleep and is closely related to the pillow and sleeping posture. So what should we do about a stiff neck?

(1) Massage: Stand behind the patient with stiff neck and press the neck with one finger to find the most painful spot. Then use a thumb to start from the top of the neck on that side and end at the shoulder and back. Massage the most painful spot vigorously until you feel obvious soreness and swelling, which means the strength is enough. Repeat this massage 2 to 3 times. Then use a hollow fist to tap the massaged area and repeat 2 to 3 times. Repeating the above massage and tapping can quickly relax the spasmodic neck muscles and relieve pain.

(2) Hot compress: hot water bottles, electric hand warmers, hot towels and infrared light bulbs can all relieve pain. Be careful to prevent burns.

(3) Use safflower oil, Gancunshan rheumatoid oil, Yun essence, etc., rub the painful area 2 to 3 times a day, which will have a certain effect.

(4) Apply moist analgesic ointment or fragrant analgesic ointment to the painful area of ​​the neck and change it once a day. The analgesic effect is ideal, but the patient will feel that the movement of the neck is restricted to a certain extent after applying the ointment. Pregnant women should not use it.

(5) Ear acupuncture: Ear acupuncture points are placed on the neck and occipital area. Press the above ear points with the tip of the index finger for 5 to 10 minutes, or massage the above ear points with the tip of the index finger.

(6) Acupuncture: For those who cannot bend forward and backward, use Dashu, Jinggu, and Kunlun points; for those who cannot look left and right, use Jianwaishu, Houxi, and Fengchi points. Generally, Xuanzhong point can be used, which is located three inches above Zuwaidong. Needle acupuncture is used for 4 to 5 minutes, and moxibustion is used for 3 to 7 minutes. This point can also be massaged for 15 minutes each time.

(7) Take one painkiller orally for temporary pain relief.

(8) Change your sleeping position, adjust the height of the pillow, and twist your neck yourself.

(9) If the condition is caused by cervical spondylosis, self-cervical traction therapy can be performed at home under the guidance of a physical therapist.

(10) For patients with severe stiff neck, local injection of 10 ml of 0.25% novocaine has a significant analgesic effect.
