What are the diagnostic methods for male oligospermia?

Oligospermia is one of the common causes of male infertility. So, what are the diagnostic methods for oligospermia? Below, the editor will take you to learn about the relevant knowledge of routine examinations for oligospermia.

1. Based on the medical history and physical examination, it can be preliminarily determined whether there is cryptorchidism and varicocele.

2. If a man abstains from sex for 3 to 7 days and his semen is routinely analyzed more than 3 times, and the sperm density is less than 20 million and no cause can be found, it can be considered as idiopathic oligospermia. When the sperm density is ≤1× 10/mL, it can be diagnosed as severe oligospermia.

3. Immunological examination can determine whether there is autoimmunity, and chromosome karyotype analysis can determine whether there is chromosomal abnormality for diagnosis. Measuring serum FSH, LH, T, and PRL is also an important method for oligospermia examination. If FSH and LH are lower than normal, it is secondary oligospermia, and elevated PRL is oligospermia caused by hyperprolactinemia.

4. Reproductive system inflammation can be confirmed based on the presence of frequent urination, urgent urination, painful urination, burning sensation in the urethra, purulent discharge from the external urethral orifice, pus cell increase in urine examination, white blood cell count greater than 10/HP in fluid examination, and urine culture.

5. Physical examination and other laboratory auxiliary examinations (genetic examination, endocrine hormone measurement, microbiological examination, antisperm antibodies, trace element measurement, etc.) can mostly find the cause of oligospermia. When semen analysis shows oligospermia and accompanied by the disease cause of oligospermia, it can be diagnosed as secondary oligospermia.

The editor reminds that men who are troubled by oligospermia should pay more attention to consuming foods high in zinc and selenium in their daily diet. At the same time, avoid eating foods containing preservatives and coloring agents.
