Acne barbae, commonly known as sheep acne, is a skin disease caused by staphylococcal infection that occurs in the hair follicles and their surroundings in the male beard area. The clinical characteristics are repeated erythema, papules, and pustules, which are difficult to cure. This disease is common in men aged 20 to 40. This disease mainly occurs on the upper lip and chin. At the beginning, it is a corn-like papule or a mung bean-sized pustule with a beard penetrating in the center. The skin between the papules is flushed and swollen, and the surface may be attached with yellow scabs or scales. The skin lesions may merge into pieces, and flushing, erosion, exudation, and scabs may be seen. The scabs will fall off and heal after 2 to 3 weeks, but it is easy to recur.

2. Causes

It is often caused by staphylococcal infection. Most patients have sebum secretion. It is more common in indoor workers than outdoor workers. Mental stress and fatigue can induce this disease.

3. Drug treatment

First, the inducing factors should be removed and the infected lesions of teeth, tonsils and nasal sinuses should be treated. The beards in the affected areas should be plucked out instead of shaving. Anti-infective drugs such as fusidic acid ointment or mupirocin ointment can be applied externally. In severe cases, oral antibiotics can be taken and glucocorticoids can be used in combination if necessary.

4. Daily care

1. Treat dental, tonsil and sinus infections promptly.

2. Wash your hands frequently.

3. Used razors should be disinfected.

4. Check regularly and seek medical attention promptly if you feel any discomfort or recurrence.

5. Diet adjustment

The diet should be light and easy to digest, and high-protein and high-vitamin foods should be appropriately increased. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, avoid spicy and irritating foods, and quit smoking and drinking.
