The red-eared turtle is more often called the Brazilian turtle in the market, but it is not native to Brazil, but to the Mississippi River in the United States. The Brazilian turtle was indeed the first to be introduced. Its appearance is the same as the red-eared turtle, but it does not have red ears. Now it has been replaced by the red-eared turtle, and people call the red-eared turtle the Brazilian turtle.

This turtle has a characteristic red stripe down the sides of its head and sometimes a red spot on the top of its head. The red stripe is sometimes broken into two or three spots and varies in color from orange to dark red. Some red-eared turtles do not have these red stripes! A typical newly hatched red-eared turtle has an attractive green carapace and skin.

The carapace is covered with a perfect pattern of yellow-green to dark green stripes. As the turtle grows, the color of the shell changes. The green base color of young adults is replaced by yellow and finally becomes a darker brown-olive color. The pattern on the shell is composed of black lines, stripes and smoky patches, sometimes interspersed with white, yellow, and even red spots. In older individuals, the pattern and the color of the shell are less different, making their carapace look more uniform.

Causes

Most of the diseases occur in aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles. The pathogen is Aeromonas hydrophila subspecies. It is often found in water, on the skin and intestines of turtles. When the water environment is good, turtles are carriers. Once the environment is polluted or the body surface is injured, the bacteria will multiply in large numbers and cause the turtles to become sick!

Symptoms

There are several soybean-sized white scabies on the neck and limbs. When you squeeze them with your hands, you will find yellow and white bean dregs around them. In the early stages of the disease, the turtle can still eat, but the appetite gradually decreases. In severe cases, the turtle stops eating and reacts slowly. Generally, the diseased turtle will die in 2-3 weeks.
