What causes nosebleeds due to a cold? How can I stop the bleeding?

Generally speaking, nosebleeds are mostly caused by external forces on the nose, such as a blow to the nose during exercise or a too dry climate. Of course, if we pick our noses hard, we are likely to experience bleeding symptoms. So, what causes nosebleeds due to a cold?

Why do you have a nosebleed due to a cold?

After catching a cold, the nasal mucosa will become congested and swollen. When you blow your nose or squeeze your nasal cavity too frequently, it will inevitably cause the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa to rupture, resulting in nosebleeds.

Methods of stopping bleeding:

1. Pinch the Cantonese

After blowing the nose (to clear the blood clots) and stuffing the nose with cotton, pinch the nostrils together with your thumb and index finger and keep pressing for 5-7 minutes. If the bleeding still does not stop, repeat the action of stuffing the cotton and pinching the nose and keep pressing for another 5-7 minutes. This should stop the bleeding.

2. Sit up straight

If you lie down or tilt your head back, the blood will flow to your throat. You can sit in a chair and lean forward (don't tilt your head back).

3. Use ice to cool down

Coldness can cause blood vessels to constrict and reduce bleeding. You can use crushed ice or an ice towel to cool your nose, neck, and cheeks.

4. Apply ointment

When the nosebleed is under control, apply some vitamin E ointment inside the nose. If vitamin E is not available, a small amount of antibiotic or steroid ointment can be used instead, applied 2 to 3 times a day. Vitamin II ointment can promote wound healing, while antibiotic or steroid ointment will destroy the staphylococcus in the nasal cavity, not only relieving itching, but also preventing the mucus from drying up (to avoid the urge to pick the nose). If the nasal mucosa is painful due to dryness, aloe vera or dysentery ointment can be used.
