1. Sciatica

Primary sciatica: Inflammatory changes in the sciatic nerve or direct damage to the sciatic nerve (buttock injection, surgery). The onset is relatively acute, and the pain radiates along the sciatic nerve from the buttocks through the back of the thigh and the groin to the outer side of the calf to the distal end. The pain is continuous and dull, and can be exacerbated or burning. The pain is relieved when standing. Some people suddenly feel a sharp pain in one side of the buttocks, accompanied by numbness in the leg and foot on the same side, and then the pain slowly disappears.

2. Radicular sciatica

It is mostly caused by lesions in the spinal canal and spine, such as intervertebral disc herniation, spondylosis, spinal bone tumors, and thickening of the ligamentum flavum. The disease develops slowly, with a history of chronic low back pain. The pain is more obvious when sitting than walking, and is relieved or disappears when lying down. The symptoms may recur, and the skin sensation of the outer side of the calf and the dorsum of the foot is reduced or disappears. The flexor muscle strength is weakened when the foot and toes are dorsiflexed, and the ankle reflex is weakened or disappears. This type of lesion can be examined by X-ray to assist in diagnosis.

3. Buttocks abscess

Abscesses can be deep or shallow. Generally, abscesses formed in the subcutaneous soft tissue are called shallow abscesses, while abscesses formed under the deep fascia and in the muscle layer and deep tissue spaces are called deep abscesses. The buttocks muscles are developed in several areas, the largest of which is the gluteus maximus. If purulent infection occurs in this muscle or between the muscles, deep abscesses will form.
