What are the treatments for periodontal abscesses? What should I pay attention to?

The treatment of periodontal abscess has always been a difficult problem in medicine. Many people rush to seek medical treatment when they have this symptom, which makes the condition more and more serious. The following are several methods for the treatment of periodontal abscess. I hope it will be helpful to you.

1. The treatment principles for acute periodontal abscess are to reduce inflammation and relieve pain, prevent the spread of infection, and drain the pus.

2. In the early stage of abscess, before pus is formed, large pieces of tartar can be removed, the periodontal pockets can be flushed, antiseptics and antibacterial drugs can be introduced into the pockets, and antibiotics or supportive therapy can be given systemically if necessary.

3. When pus is formed and localized, and fluctuates, drainage can be selected from the periodontal pocket or the gum surface according to the location of the abscess and the thickness of the surface mucosa. For the former, a sharp probe can be used to pierce the abscess cavity from the inner wall of the pocket, and for the latter, a sharp blade can be used to cut the abscess deep under surface anesthesia to allow sufficient drainage of the pus. After the incision, the abscess cavity should be thoroughly rinsed, and then antiseptic and antibacterial drugs should be applied. Premature incision and drainage will cause excessive bleeding and pain in the wound. Within a few days after the incision and drainage, the patient should be instructed to rinse with saline or chlorhexidine.

4. For patients with protruding teeth and occlusal contact pain, the obvious early contact points can be adjusted and ground to give the teeth a chance to recover quickly.

5. Chronic periodontal abscess can be treated with periodontal surgery directly on the basis of cleansing. Depending on the situation, abscess resection or flap surgery can be performed. Some people report that flap surgery can be performed as soon as possible in the short term after the acute stage of pus drainage, because acute inflammation changes the metabolism of tissues and is conducive to bone regeneration. Surgery at this time is conducive to the repair and healing of postoperative tissues, and the chance of new attachment is higher.
