Do men need to fast when checking uric acid?

There are many substances in the human body. If these substances are balanced, it means that people are very healthy. However, many people are not very healthy, so we need to check their bodies. Some people ask whether you need to fast when checking uric acid. Of course, you need to fast when checking uric acid. In addition, what other issues should be paid attention to when checking uric acid? Let us learn about whether you need to fast when checking uric acid.

Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism. Disorders in purine metabolism, abnormal energy metabolism, and impaired renal excretion of uric acid can all cause an increase in plasma uric acid concentration (hyperuricemia) or a decrease (hypouricemia). It is currently believed that uric acid measurement is the best biochemical marker for diagnosing gout caused by purine metabolism disorders. The main feature of gout is hyperuricemia, which causes renal lesions such as gouty acute arthritis, tophi deposits, tophi chronic arthritis and joint deformities, uric acid kidney stones, etc., which are very harmful to health. Uric acid measurement is also helpful for the early diagnosis of renal lesions.

Uric acid is a product of purine metabolism in the human body. Meat, animal organs and seafood that we usually eat contain high levels of purine. Purine is synthesized into uric acid in the liver. Most of the uric acid is excreted from the body through the kidneys with urine, and a small amount is excreted through feces and sweat. Under normal circumstances, uric acid in the body is in a balanced state. If you eat too much high-purine food or the uric acid excretion mechanism degenerates, there will be too much uric acid in the body. If uric acid crystals are released in soft tissues such as articular membranes, it will cause an overreaction of the immune system and cause gout.

Gout is a primary hyperuricemia. In addition, high uric acid levels caused by acute and chronic leukemia, renal dysfunction, toxic liver disease, etc. are called secondary hyperuricemia. The main indicator to distinguish between primary and secondary is the urine uric acid value. If the urine uric acid value increases, it represents primary hyperuricemia, and vice versa, it represents secondary hyperuricemia. In addition, pregnancy reactions, strenuous activities, and high-purine diets can also increase uric acid levels. Therefore, if the uric acid value is high, the above three reasons must be ruled out first.

High-purine foods can increase uric acid levels. Therefore, when checking kidney function, especially when focusing on uric acid, it is best to draw blood in the early morning on an empty stomach, especially to avoid drawing blood after the above-mentioned high-purine foods. Strictly speaking, patients should avoid eating high-purine foods the day before blood draw, and are prohibited from drinking and strenuous exercise. In addition, if gout is diagnosed based on uric acid levels, some drugs that affect uric acid excretion, such as certain antihypertensive drugs and diuretics, are best discontinued a few days before blood draw. Blood uric acid concentrations sometimes fluctuate, and a single increase does not mean that you have gout. Generally, a recheck at least every 3 days is sufficient.

Do I need to fast when checking uric acid? This question is not difficult to answer. When we find that there are certain problems with our bodies, we must go to the hospital for examination and treatment in time. Don't delay it because of trouble or other objective reasons. This will only make the disease more and more serious and eventually lead to a serious disease.
