Although HPV infection is common, the cellular immunity and humoral immunity produced by the body after infection can eliminate most HPVs. Therefore, only a few people have subclinical HPV infection, and very few develop genital warts.

The main route of transmission is direct transmission through sexual intercourse. About 60% of the sexual partners of patients with genital warts are infected with HPV. Occasionally, it may be transmitted indirectly through contaminated clothing and equipment. Newborns born to mothers infected with HPV may suffer from laryngeal papilloma, but it is not yet clear whether the route of transmission is intrauterine infection, birth canal infection or postpartum infection. It is generally believed that it is infected through the mother's soft birth canal.
