What is the reason for itchy male urethra?

If a man feels itchy and uncomfortable at the urethral opening, it is likely due to an infection in the urinary or reproductive system, such as glansitis. If the urethral opening is itchy and you also feel pain when urinating or have symptoms such as frequent urination or urgency, it may be caused by urethritis. The following will introduce some common causes of male urethritis.

1. Acute urethritis. The urethral mucosa is congested and swollen, the urethral opening is itchy, or there is erosion and ulceration. In severe cases, it may develop to the epididymis, spermatic cord, or submucosal area. Chronic urethritis is often caused by the involvement of the urethral submucosal tissue, which is repaired by the connective tissue, resulting in urethral stenosis. Clinical examination in the acute stage shows that the urethral opening is red and swollen, there is mucous or purulent secretion, and the urethra is tender and hard.

2. Specific urethritis, including gonococcal urethritis and non-gonococcal urethritis. Other specific urethritis cases include urethritis caused by tuberculosis, trichomonas, fungi, viruses, etc. Non-specific urethritis includes infections caused by staphylococci and Escherichia coli. Patients may have symptoms of urethral itching. Urethritis is mostly caused by retrograde infection, that is, the bacteria directly invade the urethra.

If the urethral itching is not a symptom of urethritis and is not related to sexual contact, it does not fall into the category of STDs. It is mainly caused by inflammation of the urogenital organs (such as cystitis, prostatitis), lesions of the urethra itself (such as urethral stenosis, stones and phimosis, etc.), trauma (such as medical machine examination), etc. This is not a STD. During treatment, attention should be paid to finding out the cause of the disease. While conducting anti-infection treatment, treatment targeting the cause should be carried out.

Now that you know some common causes of itching in the male urethra, you can get checked and treated in time according to your own situation. During the treatment period, you should also pay attention to hygiene, wash with clean water every day and change your underwear in time. When choosing underwear, it is best to choose pure cotton and loose ones to minimize friction on the private parts.
