Why do boys need circumcision surgery?

When summer comes, parents may find a strange phenomenon: parents around them are competing to take their babies to get circumcised. When asked why, the other party can't explain why, just saying that everyone has circumcised, and it's hard to justify not having one. As for why it is set in the summer, it may be because the summer is longer, which is good for the circulation of body and mind, and the clothes and pants worn in summer are less, and the ventilation is good, which is good for the recovery of surgery. Many parents have doubts in their hearts: Is this blindly following the trend or is it really necessary? In what cases does a baby need circumcision?

1. Generally speaking, babies do not need circumcision surgery

Many parents choose to have their babies circumcised. One of the key reasons is that the baby has a long foreskin or an excessive foreskin:

"Long foreskin" means that the glans penis is covered by the foreskin, but the foreskin is too long and the outer opening is too loose, and the foreskin can be opened with force;

"Phimosis" means that the foreskin is too long and the outer opening tightly encloses the head of the male genitals, leaving only a tiny opening exposed, and the foreskin cannot be opened with force.

They think that if the baby's male genitals are "covered" by the long foreskin, it will be detrimental to the boy's development, and they are also worried that it will affect the baby's future male sexual function.

But in fact, most cases of long foreskin and prepuce are normal physiological phenomena. As the baby grows up, the prepuce will shrink gradually. Generally, by the time of puberty, there will be no such trouble of "too long" or "too tight". Moreover, whether the prepuce is long or short has nothing to do with the length of the baby's penis or sexual function. Circumcision will not make the baby's penis grow stronger.

Some parents think that urine scale is dirty and that circumcision will prevent diseases. But in fact, the existence of urine scale is harmful. It will not cause any diseases (such as penile cancer) and does not need to be removed deliberately. Circumcision may reduce the risk of urogenital infection, but not circumcising will not make the baby more susceptible to illness. It is really unnecessary to take a baby for circumcision for this reason alone.

2. What are the situations that really require circumcision?

So, when does a baby need circumcision? Choose three situations:

1. Physiological prepuce is too long: It is usually caused by inflammation. Scar tissue will be produced on the far side of the prepuce, preventing the foreskin from everting. This condition is not easy to cure. You need to take the baby to the hospital for treatment immediately, and circumcision surgery if necessary;

2. Abnormal urination: If the baby repeatedly develops balanitis or urinary tract infection, and has frequent urination, urgent urination, inability to hold urine, urination pain, etc.; or the baby has a long foreskin and a narrow opening, and has difficulty urinating, and the urine is thin and bifurcated, or the foreskin is too long and bulges with "water bubbles", then circumcision can be considered;

3. Phimosis: If the baby's foreskin is too long and after it is opened, the foreskin opening becomes narrow and tightly encircles the male genitals, it is best to take the baby to the hospital for outpatient treatment as soon as possible, otherwise it may cause necrosis of the male genitals.

There is no strict age limit for circumcision of babies. Doctors can perform surgery on babies if they have a disease that needs to be treated. All parents need to do is to eliminate unnecessary circumcision situations and not blindly follow the trend.
