Can prostate surgery cure it?

Men who eat broccoli regularly may be less likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer than men who rarely eat broccoli, a new study finds.

Researchers at the Ontario Cancer Care Centre in Toronto looked at more than 29,000 American men aged 55 to 74 who were followed for an average of four years. When the study began, the men did not have prostate cancer and filled out questionnaires about the foods they ate.

During the study period, the men underwent regular prostate cancer screening, and a total of 1,338 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, including 520 with aggressive prostate cancer.

Overall, for these men, the amount of fruit and vegetable consumption seemed to have little effect on their risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer, but eating cruciferous vegetables was an exception. Men who ate a lot of cruciferous vegetables were less likely to be diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. Broccoli and cauliflower were both vegetables that showed significant protection against prostate cancer.

Pathological diagnosis

Prostate cancer is highly malignant, with obvious local infiltration and lymphatic metastasis in the early stage. The tumor often invades the seminal vesicle and the pelvic walls on both sides, and rarely invades the rectum. It metastasizes to the nearby pelvic lymph nodes along the lymphatic vessels, and then to the internal iliac, common iliac, para-aortic, diaphragmatic lymph nodes, and even supraclavicular lymph nodes. Prostate cancer can also metastasize to bones through the blood vessels, most commonly the pelvis, lumbar spine, femur, and ribs. It can also metastasize to the lungs, liver, kidneys, brain and other organs through the blood vessels.

Digital rectal examination of the prostate is an effective method for diagnosing prostate cancer. Since this type of cancer often occurs in the posterior lobe and the edges of the lateral lobes of the prostate, the lesions are hard in texture, so the rectal finger position can touch the nodules. The symptoms of prostate cancer are enlarged glands, hard nodules, unevenness, disappearance of the central groove, fixed glands, and sometimes invasion of the intestinal wall.

If a rectal examination is performed on men over 45 years old, prostate cancer can be detected early and the cure rate can be improved. If a hard lump is found on the prostate during a digital examination, the possibility of this disease should be considered regardless of its distribution location, protrusion from the gland, or regularity. If prostate cancer can be detected and diagnosed early, better treatment results can be achieved.
