Calcium deficiency isn't the only cause of muscle cramps

We often experience sudden leg cramps when we are sleeping or having a sweet dream, or sudden calf cramps when we are running. We usually think that cramps are caused by calcium deficiency, but it is not just that.

Fatigue during exercise

The main reason why cramps occur during exercise is fatigue. Exercise consumes glycogen as an energy source. When glycogen is consumed too quickly, such as in a short sprint, or is not replenished, such as when running a marathon without timely calories, the muscles lack energy and cramps are likely to occur. Secondly, when exercising, sweating a lot causes the body to lose water and electrolytes, leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, which can also easily cause cramps.

Poor blood circulation during sleep

Cramps in sleep are often related to poor blood circulation. Low temperatures can make blood circulation worse, so if the quilt is not properly covered or the air conditioner or fan blows directly on the feet in the middle of the night, the possibility of cramps will increase. Excessive exercise during the day can also cause muscle fatigue and cramps in the middle of the night. Some elderly people drink too little water and too much diuretic tea, which may also cause cramps in the middle of the night due to relative dehydration or electrolyte imbalance.

The posture has been fixed for a long time

Cramps can also occur if you maintain a fixed posture for a long time. This is caused by poor local blood circulation and muscle fatigue. This is also the reason why your toes will cramp in turn after wearing high heels for a day.
