Will there be any sequelae after a fracture? What are the sequelae of a fracture?

Fracture sequelae refer to complications after fracture healing that occur some time after the fracture is treated. They are historical problems. Common fracture sequelae include joint stiffness, ankylosis, and partial or complete restriction of movement.

Fracture sequelae

1. Malunion

Malunion of fractures affects function, such as radial and ulnar fractures affecting forearm rotation, especially supination. Malunion of tibia and fibula fractures with angulation or rotation causes uneven stress distribution in the knee or ankle joint, resulting in traumatic arthritis. Consult a specialist and weigh the pros and cons to consider orthopedic or plasty surgery.

2. Delayed healing and non-union of fractures

The reason is inaccurate and unstable fixation, which often requires another surgery or bone grafting.

3. Bone loss, osteomyelitis and purulent sinus

Most of them are caused by high-energy violent open injuries, often with exposed bones, which are difficult to treat. Doctors often use Ilizarov bone lengthening technology to treat them, and at the same time perform skin grafting to complete wound coverage.

4. Spinal cord injury or paralysis of limbs

Spinal cord injury is caused by instantaneous violence. As a sequela, patients should receive care and rehabilitation training under the guidance of a doctor. Do not expect to relieve stress again or trust spinal cord nerve tissue transplantation or biological therapy surgery that is said to promote the regeneration of damaged nerve tissue. Although the latter has been proven to promote nerve regeneration, it is still in the animal experimental stage.

5. Femoral head necrosis

If there is a tendency for collapse and deformation, and recurrent pain affects function, artificial joint replacement surgery should be performed.
