Why do men have high white blood cell counts in their urine?

Many units organize physical examinations for employees every year. Many people will have elevated urine white blood cell counts during the physical examinations. Many people don’t understand this professional term. In fact, elevated urine white blood cell counts are mostly related to certain inflammations. A detailed examination should be done in time, especially for some men who have this phenomenon. Here, I will introduce some knowledge about elevated urine white blood cell counts in men!

Routine high white blood cell count in urine does not rule out urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infection is divided into upper urinary tract infection, i.e. pyelonephritis, and lower urinary tract infection, i.e. cystitis. The main symptoms of cystitis are frequent urination, urgency, and pain during urination. Pyelonephritis usually has chills, high fever, accompanied by headache, body aches, weakness, loss of appetite, and symptoms of cystitis, often accompanied by back pain or discomfort in the kidney area.

White blood cells in the human body belong to the category of immune system. The increase of white blood cells in the human body indicates that there is an infection in the body. White blood cells will automatically increase in number to fight against bacteria and viruses in order to achieve the purpose of immunity. In a routine urine test, there will be a small amount of white blood cells in the urine. This is the natural excretion of white blood cells after death, which is a normal physiological phenomenon. However, when the white blood cells increase to a certain number, it means that the infection in the body is serious. Therefore, a high number of white blood cells in urine is a clear sign of urinary tract infection.

[Normal reference value] After centrifugation and sedimentation: White blood cells: 0-2/hp for males, 0-5/hp for females Note: hp is the high-power field of view of the microscope, i.e., 40 times. The quantitative urine white blood cells measured by the machine are represented by + (positive), and the normal value is - (negative). Most of the white blood cells in urine are neutrophils that appear during inflammatory infections. Degenerative changes have occurred, with irregular shapes and fuzzy structures. They can also be called pus cells, which are seen in urinary tract infections such as acute and chronic pyelonephritis and cystitis.

Routine urine leukocytes are the white blood cells among the three types of cells in a routine urine examination. There may be a small amount of white blood cells in normal urine. Generally, the number of white blood cells per high-power field (HP) of centrifugal urine is 1 to 2, which is still normal. If there are more than 5 white blood cells per high-power field, it is called submicroscopic purulent urine. Submicroscopic purulent urine indicates that there is purulent inflammation in the urethra, such as pyelonephritis, cystitis or urethritis, renal tuberculosis, etc.; in glomerulonephritis, the number of white blood cells in the urine may also increase slightly.

If the urine white blood cell count is high, it is best to go to a professional and regular hospital for a detailed examination to find out the cause of the high urine white blood cell count. Timely symptomatic treatment is very necessary. You can use some anti-inflammatory drugs under the guidance of a doctor. Generally speaking, the earlier all diseases are discovered, the easier they are to treat.
