What are the effects of high testosterone in men?

Testosterone is also called testosterone. Both men and women secrete testosterone. Men's testosterone is secreted by the testicles, while women's testosterone is secreted by the ovaries. Testosterone has the function of maintaining muscle strength, quality and bone density. It plays an important role in the male reproductive organs, and also has an inseparable effect on the brain, emotions and cardiovascular system. So, what is the reason for high testosterone in men?

1. Normal testosterone value:

Normal testosterone values vary according to age and gender. Normal testosterone values are as follows:

1. Normal testosterone levels in adults:

(1) Male: 14-25.4nmol/L.

(2) Female: 1.3-2.8nmol/L.

2. Children:

(1) Male: <8.8nmol/L.

(2) Female: <0.7nmol/L.

3. Normal testosterone level during pregnancy: 2.7~5.3nmol/L.

The ovarian follicles can secrete testosterone, accounting for about 1/4; the adrenal cortex also secretes 1/4 of the testosterone, and about 1/2 of the testosterone is converted from extraglandular androstenedione.

Testosterone is measured by radioimmunoassay. The normal value of testosterone in women is 0.7-3.1umol/L, and the normal value of testosterone in men is 9.0-45.8umol/L.

2. What is high testosterone? Causes of high testosterone:

If a woman is found to have high testosterone, it is likely caused by ovarian dysfunction; if a man is found to have high testosterone, testicular dysfunction is considered. High testosterone is generally seen in:

1. Precocious puberty: idiopathic male precocious puberty and familial male precocious puberty.

2. Adrenal gland diseases: adrenal cortical hyperplasia, adrenal cortical tumors (adenocarcinomas are significantly increased, and adenomas are also often increased).

3. Testicular diseases: testicular tumors, testicular feminization.

4. Ovarian diseases: polycystic ovary syndrome, ovarian androgenic tumor.

5. Others: pineal tumor, idiopathic hirsutism, hypothyroidism, androgen, HCG and estrogen treatment are moderate.

The effects of high testosterone in women are: high testosterone in women will manifest as menstrual changes such as infrequent menstruation, amenorrhea or dysfunctional uterine bleeding, ovulation dysfunction, and single basal body temperature. After a long period of onset, some patients will have masculinization changes, such as excessive hair growth, enlarged Adam's apple, and low voice, some will be obese, have acne, poor breast development, poor uterine development, and enlarged ovaries, etc. A small number of patients will have clitoral enlargement, which will affect normal ovulation and cause infertility.

3. What to do if testosterone is high?

It can be treated with medication, surgery, and traditional Chinese medicine.

1. Drug treatment

Patients with high testosterone levels can be treated with medication aimed at inhibiting androgen production or anti-androgens, controlling weight and removing excess hair.

High testosterone is mainly treated with Diane 35. Drug treatment can counteract the effects of androgens and promote ovulation of follicles. It is generally taken for about 3-6 months. It needs to be taken from the first day of menstruation, and it should be taken for 21 consecutive days before stopping. During the treatment period, it is necessary to regularly check six hormones. After the six hormone tests, if it returns to normal, the drug can be stopped.

Women with cystic ovary syndrome can take metformin tablets. Generally, metformin is taken with the first bite of food. Metformin controls the absorption of excess sugar during meals and prevents weight gain. Taking Diane 35 after meals can effectively reduce testosterone levels.

2. Surgical treatment

If the medication is ineffective and the androgen level is not significantly reduced, laparoscopic surgery should be considered. Under laparoscopy, the follicles are punctured to reduce androgen levels, thereby achieving the treatment goal.

(1) Patients who have given birth and have no plans to have more children can undergo resection surgery.

(2) Patients who wish to have children can undergo laparoscopic electrocautery or laser removal of polycystic ovary syndrome to reduce androgen levels.

3. Traditional Chinese medicine conditioning

Through traditional Chinese medicine methods, female hormones are regulated, ovarian function is restored, and ovulation is promoted.

Testosterone is the main hormone that maintains male sexual characteristics, but female ovaries and adrenal glands also have the function of producing small amounts of androgens. When female testosterone is too high, it seriously damages female ovarian function, affects follicle formation, and ultimately leads to female infertility. Excessively high testosterone levels have a certain impact on pregnancy, but most women can become pregnant naturally after treatment.

Under normal circumstances, the testosterone in women's serum is stable within a certain range. If it exceeds the normal value, it indicates the possibility of disease. In the follicular phase of a normal menstrual cycle, the average serum testosterone concentration is 0.43ng/ml, and the upper limit is 0.68ng/ml. If it exceeds 0.7ng/ml (equal to 2.44nmol/L), it is called hypertestosteroneemia, or hyperandrogenemia.

Therefore, both men and women should have a certain understanding of their own bodies. The above are the reasons why men have high testosterone. In fact, high testosterone in men has no effect on the body. High testosterone in women will have a great impact on the body. If women have such a situation, they should be treated in time, otherwise abnormal ovulation will occur, leading to infertility.
