Effects of prostate biopsy

Effects of prostate biopsy

As they age, some elderly male patients often experience urination difficulties, urinary incontinence and other symptoms, and they think it is a manifestation of aging. Some patients even think they have contracted a sexually transmitted disease, and feel embarrassed to go to some small clinics for examination. If a man has urinary difficulties, urinary incontinence, frequent urination, hematuria and other symptoms, it means that there is a problem with the prostate, so he should go to the hospital for a prostate biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

For patients with early-stage prostate cancer, surgery, radiotherapy, and endocrine therapy can achieve satisfactory results. The specific treatment plan should be based on the patient's age, general condition, local extent of the cancer, and metastasis. As for advanced prostate cancer, doctors are not helpless. However, patients with mid- and late-stage tumors often lose the chance of radical cure. After 12-18 months of treatment, they often become hormone-insensitive and ineffective to hormone-blocking therapy. They can only receive second-line drug therapy or salvage therapy, but the effect is poor. Therefore, early detection, early diagnosis, and early treatment are the key to prostate diagnosis and treatment.

Prostate biopsy helps to determine the nature and histological type of prostate tumors. For patients with elevated serum PSA, clinical symptoms and rectal indications suspected of prostate cancer, prostate biopsy is recommended to confirm the diagnosis in order to decide on treatment options.

Before undergoing a prostate biopsy, you should be fully prepared:

1. Routine blood test: Routine blood test should be performed before puncture. Its purpose is to determine whether there are any contraindications to puncture such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, bleeding tendency, etc.

2. Suspend the use of drugs that affect blood coagulation: Patients who are undergoing a puncture biopsy and are taking drugs that affect blood coagulation, such as aspirin, Plavix, low molecular weight heparin, etc., need to stop taking the drugs for more than one week before the puncture to avoid heavy bleeding.

3. Take antibiotics to prevent infection: Patients can take antibiotics a few days before puncture to prevent infection after puncture.

4. Bowel preparation: On the eve of puncture, the patient should fast after dinner, take laxatives orally, and empty the stool as bowel preparation.

5. Check the electrocardiogram: Elderly patients should undergo an electrocardiogram before puncture.

When doing a prostate puncture biopsy, there will be a certain degree of damage to the body. You should pay attention to care and avoid infection. Hematuria will occur after the prostate puncture surgery. Patients do not need to panic. This is a normal phenomenon. Generally, this symptom will gradually ease in about a week.
