What causes itching and peeling of the coronal sulcus?

For men, itching of the glans is a common problem, which is why many men secretly scratch their penises. In fact, there are many reasons for itching of the glans, which may be caused by not paying attention to personal hygiene or may be related to some diseases. So from a medical point of view, what is the reason for itching and peeling of the coronal sulcus of the penis in men?

Balanus itching is usually caused by genital infections such as balanitis. Patients feel itching or burning sensation in the glans, followed by pain. After suppuration, pus may flow and have a foul odor. Severe cases may cause fatigue, low fever, enlarged and tender inguinal lymph nodes. Some patients scratch the glans due to itching, making the inflammation more serious.

Causes

1. Infection

It is often caused by unclean sexual intercourse, infection with Candida albicans, Trichomonas, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Gonorrhea or other bacteria.

2. Non-infectious factors

Most of them are caused by excessive foreskin and insufficient cleaning, which leads to the accumulation of dirt between the foreskin and the glans penis, namely smegma, which irritates the local foreskin and mucous membrane and causes inflammation.

3. Balanitis

It manifests as erythema on the glans penis, and there are usually small pustules or papules on the surface. It also manifests as local edema of the glans penis mucosa, mild desquamation at the edges, and papules and pustules expand to the surrounding area to form glans penis erosion.

Clinical manifestations

In addition to causing glans itching, balanitis has the following types and accompanying symptoms:

1. Acute superficial balanitis

Initially, there is local flushing, redness and swelling of the penis skin, and a burning and itching sensation on the glans penis. When the foreskin is turned back, the inner surface of the foreskin and the glans penis can be seen to be congested and eroded, with exudate and even bleeding. After secondary infection, small ulcers can be seen, with a foul-smelling milky white purulent secretion. It is painful when rubbed against underwear, and patients often have difficulty in moving and itching of the glans penis. It may be accompanied by enlargement and tenderness of the inguinal lymph nodes.

2. Circumflex balanoposthitis

On the glans penis and foreskin, erythema can be seen, which gradually expands and becomes ring-shaped, and may form a superficial ulcer surface.

3. Candida albicans balanitis

Erythema can be seen on the foreskin and glans penis. The surface is smooth and there are small blisters. The edges of the erythema are clear. In acute attacks, there are erosions and exudates.

4. Trichomonas balanoposthitis

Papules and erythema appear on the glans penis, gradually expanding with clear edges. Needle-sized blisters can be seen on the erythema, and finally an erosive surface is formed.

Check

1. Perform a routine urine test to find out if there is any urethral infection. If necessary, do a smear test to determine whether it is caused by fungi or bacteria.

2. Take urethral secretions to check for chlamydia and mycoplasma infection to determine whether it is non-gonococcal urethritis.

3. Prostate examination is used to understand whether the itching of the glans penis is caused by prostatitis.
