Does obesity in men affect pregnancy?

Many people attach great importance to the quality of the next generation. Many people will consider whether men's obesity will affect pregnancy. Many people worry that men's obesity will have a great impact on the genes of the next generation. Many people think that men's obesity will cause problems with men's sperm conditions and other aspects. But is this really the case? Will men's obesity affect pregnancy? If so, what kind of impact will it have? If you are a little fat or want to learn about this knowledge, then read the following to learn about it.

Obesity Measurement

Standard weight of adult male (kg) = height (cm) - 100

Women's standard weight (kg) = height (cm) - 105

Standard weight of children (over 2 years old) (kg) = age X2 + 8.

It is normal for a person's weight to fluctuate within 10% of the standard weight.

For example, the standard weight for a woman 165cm tall is 60kg. If it is 66kg but less than 72kg, that is, more than 10% but less than 20%, it is called "overweight" or "overweight", but not obese. Only when it is more than 72kg (20% more than the standard weight) is it considered "obese".

Does obesity in men affect pregnancy?

Studies have shown that obesity in men will have a certain impact on pregnancy, mainly in the following aspects:

1. Obesity affects the quantity and quality of sperm

Obesity affects sperm quantity and quality mainly because:

(1) Adipose tissue affects sex hormone metabolism, which may hinder sperm production and sperm quality;

(2) Temperature may have a negative impact on sperm production. The normal human body temperature is around 37°C, and the optimal temperature for sperm production is 2°C lower than normal. Obese men have more fat, so their body temperature is higher than normal people. A high temperature in the scrotum will directly affect the spermatogenic ability of the testicles, resulting in a decrease in sperm production; even if the amount of sperm produced is not affected, the quality of the sperm produced will be affected;

(3) Obesity can cause diabetes or latent diabetes. Higher sugar levels in the blood can damage the DNA in sperm and thus affect male fertility.

2. Obesity affects sexual function

Some obese men have decreased sexual function. Some men are slightly overweight and have normal sexual function, but about half of obese men have decreased sexual function. The reasons why obesity leads to decreased sexual function are:

(1) Excessive obesity and increased blood lipids affect the liver's metabolic functions, reduce its ability to inactivate estrogen, enhance the conversion of androgens into estrogen, increase the level of estrogen in the blood, increase the secretion of gonadotropin by the pituitary gland, reduce androgen secretion, and cause sexual dysfunction;

(2) Obese people are more likely to have cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, which can affect men’s sexual function to a certain extent. In addition, obese people have less physical activity, are easily fatigued, and sometimes suffer from premature ejaculation, which may be another factor that reduces sexual function.

Does obesity cause infertility?

It is not certain that obesity will definitely cause infertility, as it depends on other factors. For example, if an obese man marries a normal woman, the obese man's reproductive function will be compensated by the other party, so it will not necessarily cause infertility. However, if an obese man marries an obese woman, the obesity of the two will be superimposed and form an amplification effect, thus causing infertility.

Therefore, it is recommended that men and women who are too obese should lose weight before preparing for pregnancy. However, it should be noted that for obese patients, they should not implement a pregnancy plan immediately after losing weight. At this time, it is not suitable for pregnancy if the body is unstable. It is best to wait for a period of time to stabilize before preparing for pregnancy.
