What should you do if you encounter a neck fracture and how should you care for it?

Among fractures, neck fractures are uncommon, and most are caused by external forces. Injured patients should be careful not to move them at will. Neck fractures should be treated promptly and correctly, as the neck is an important part of the brain that connects to the body. If not handled properly, it can lead to serious damage, which can put the patient's life in danger.

First aid measures

1. If the patient has lost consciousness during the fracture, the most basic emergency treatment is to ensure that the airway is open (do not twist the head at this time, just stretch the neck forward). If the patient is not breathing, artificial respiration should be performed.

2. When transporting patients with cervical fractures (high thoracic fractures), use door panels or ladders as stretchers. Do not allow the neck to move, put towels, blankets, etc. around the head, and use bricks, stones, etc. to fix the head to prevent shaking.

Notes

1. If the nerve is severed at the time of fracture, there is nothing that can be done. However, if the nerve is severed due to rough movement, it is a pity. It is best to ask an expert to handle the movement.

2. If a cervical fracture occurs and there is no one around, you should keep warm and wait patiently for help. Be aware that this type of fracture can be fatal if you move. Because a cervical fracture is a fracture of the cervical spine, there are nerves passing through the center of the spine. These nerves can transmit the brain's commands to the whole body like cables, and can also transmit the body's feelings to the brain. If the fracture cuts or compresses the nerves in the spine, the lower part of the neck will be completely paralyzed, and sometimes breathing will stop.

3. Cervical fractures are common in cases of accidentally diving into a shallow swimming pool, falling from a high place, or traffic accidents.
