Normal blood sugar levels in the elderly and specific goals for blood sugar control

In daily life, abnormal blood sugar levels in the elderly can easily pose a threat to their lives. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the normal blood sugar levels of the elderly when measuring them.

Normal blood sugar levels for the elderly:

1. With typical symptoms, fasting blood glucose ≥7.0 mmol/l or postprandial blood glucose ≥11.1 mmol/l.

2. If there are no typical symptoms, but only fasting blood sugar ≥7.0 mmol/l or postprandial blood sugar ≥11.1 mmol/l, the test should be repeated once. If the above values are still reached, it can be confirmed as diabetes.

3. Patients without typical symptoms but with fasting blood sugar ≥7.0 mmol/l or postprandial blood sugar ≥11.1 mmol/l or 2-hour blood sugar ≥11.1mmol/l in a glucose tolerance test can be diagnosed with diabetes.

Blood sugar control goals for elderly patients with diabetes:

1. For elderly diabetic patients aged 60-70 years old, who are in good basic physical condition and have no obvious complications of large and small blood vessels, whether they use oral hypoglycemic drugs or insulin, they can control fasting blood sugar, 2-hour postprandial blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin within the normal range and have no risk of hypoglycemia. They can follow the requirements of enhanced blood sugar control to get as close to the above standards as possible to prevent the occurrence of large and small blood vessel complications. Many elderly diabetic patients with milder conditions only use metformin and glucosidase inhibitors, without secretagogues and insulin, and their blood sugar reaches normal without causing hypoglycemia. The blood sugar control target for such people can be close to the normal range.

2. For newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients over 70 years old, even if their basic physical condition is relatively good and they have no cardiovascular and microvascular complications, blood sugar level control should not be strengthened. They should be kept between 6-7 mmol/L for fasting blood sugar, around 8-9 mmol/L for postprandial blood sugar, and 6.5%-7.0% for HbAlc, in order to prevent the occurrence of severe hypoglycemia and affect heart and brain function.
