Causes and treatments of sequelae of femoral fractures

Causes and treatments of sequelae of femoral fractures

Thigh fractures are most common in traffic accidents. Generally speaking, if the surgery or care is not done properly after a fracture, it is easy to leave sequelae. So, what are the causes and methods of sequelae of thigh fractures?

1. Damage repair

Joint stiffness or ankylosis is related to the severity of fracture injury (including soft tissue injury around the joint). High-energy violence (such as motor vehicle runover or collision) has serious consequences. Fracture and soft tissue repair form a large amount of fibrous tissue and scar tissue, and even cartilage or bone tissue (such as myositis ossificans). The healing of surgical trauma also involves the same tissue formation.

2. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome

It is a common and important iatrogenic cause of reflex neuronutrition disorder, osteoporosis, atrophy, and joint stiffness caused by trauma. In addition, activities under unstable fixation aggravate inflammatory reactions. Therefore, functional training under stable conditions is worth promoting.

3. Improper functional training

Treatment should be based on prevention. First of all, stable fixation should be ensured, and functional exercises should be performed actively on this basis. Forced activities and violent massage should be avoided, otherwise the joints will be injured, the injury-repair inflammatory reaction will be aggravated, and more severe adhesions and joint stiffness will be formed.

4. Malunion

Malunion of fractures affects function, such as radial and ulnar fractures affecting forearm rotation, especially supination. Malunion of tibia and fibula fractures with angulation or rotation causes uneven stress distribution in the knee or ankle joint, resulting in traumatic arthritis. Consult a specialist and weigh the pros and cons to consider orthopedic or plasty surgery.
