Is dry cough caused by pharyngitis?

If the cough is paroxysmal and dry, ineffective with antibiotics, accompanied by an itchy throat, without fever, fear of cold air and smoke, and worsens at night, and if CT or X-ray examinations show no abnormalities, then it is likely an allergic cough, also called cough variant asthma or allergic bronchitis.

If the dry cough is accompanied by symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as rubbing the nose, rubbing the eyes, sneezing, runny nose and nasal congestion, it may be an allergic cough caused by allergic rhinitis, also called allergic rhinitis-bronchitis.

What is pharyngitis

Chronic pharyngitis is a common pharyngeal disease, and its prominent symptom is an irritating dry cough. Patients often have a dry cough to clear the throat due to itching and discomfort in the throat, and the symptoms are more obvious when talking. The symptoms can be alleviated after drinking water or swallowing. Most of them are secondary to infectious lesions of the upper respiratory tract, or are more common in frequent smokers, alcoholics, and those who engage in certain activities that are exposed to harmful dust or gas.

Examination of the pharynx may reveal congestion of the pharynx. Many dilated capillaries and a small amount of lymphatic follicle proliferation can be seen on the surface of the posterior pharyngeal mucosa. This is more common in people who are exposed to certain harmful dusts or gases.

What is laryngitis

The main symptom is hoarseness, which often occurs intermittently in the early stage and occurs when the patient speaks more. If the condition worsens, the hoarseness may become persistent, but it is rare for the patient to not suffer from aphonia. The patient coughs dryly to alleviate the symptoms.

According to laryngeal mucoscopic examination, patients with chronic simple laryngitis often show congestion of the laryngeal mucosa, loss of luster of the vocal cords, dilated blood vessels distributed on them, and increased mucus secretions. When the condition worsens and develops into chronic proliferative laryngitis, the mucosa is obviously thickened and dark red, with thickened and rounded edges. It is often incompletely closed during pronunciation, and the laryngeal ventricular zone is often thickened due to compensatory activities. Chronic atrophic laryngitis is relatively rare, and yellow-green crusts are often coughed up after coughing, and there is a burning or painful sensation in the throat.
