Postpartum depression in men

Postpartum depression in men

Postpartum depression is not exclusive to women. Men also experience some symptoms of postpartum depression. The heart of the mother will gradually produce some signs of depression. The father-to-be will experience extreme pain, depression, sadness and sorrow in his heart. If the postpartum depression of men is not treated in time, it will have some serious consequences. Therefore, the treatment of postpartum depression in men is also a key issue.

Patients will have some violent tendencies, do not want to work, are not proactive in anything, and have some bad habits. Severe cases may threaten the relationship between the couple and actually commit suicide. Therefore, depression also has a negative impact on the psychological development of children.

Postpartum depression in men is always characterized by persistent low moods, which can progress from melancholy to grief, and in severe cases, psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions may occur. Generally speaking, if at least the following four symptoms are present and the symptoms persist for at least 2 weeks, a preliminary diagnosis of depression can be made.

1. Low mood, usually characterized by being worse in the morning and better in the evening;

2. Slow thinking, reduced memory, slow brain reaction, etc.;

3. Less activity, unwilling to participate in social activities, often preferring to be alone;

4. Often feel anxious and guilty, and worry about adding burden to the family;

5. Sleep disorders, with early awakening as the typical manifestation;

6. Symptoms include fatigue, palpitations, chest tightness, gastrointestinal discomfort, constipation, etc.

7. Having self-destructive, world-weary or suicidal thoughts and behaviors;

8. Significant decrease in sexual desire.

Men tend to hide their emotions in front of others and play the role of "strong man". Therefore, male postpartum depression is often ignored, misunderstood and neglected.

The above are the common manifestations of postpartum depression in men. The main reason for depression in men is that men are not fully prepared for having children. There are also some effects on sexual life, which can easily cause depression in men. Therefore, good treatment plans and other types of treatments must be adopted in daily life.
