Where is the penis located?

The organs of our body have distinct functions. For men, the genitals are outside the body, so they must be protected. Where is the penis we often talk about? The penis is a part of the reproductive system. It is outside the body, so it is more sensitive and easily injured. Men should pay attention to protecting it. When problems occur in the penis, it is often related to the lesions of the entire genitals and should be treated in time.

1. It is divided into three parts: root, body and head. The rear part is the root of the penis, which is attached to the inferior ramus of the pubic bone, the sciatic ramus and the urogenital diaphragm; the middle part is the body of the penis, which is cylindrical and hangs down in front of the pubic symphysis; the front part is enlarged as the glans penis, with a sagittal cleft at the tip of the head called the external urethral orifice, and there is a ring-shaped groove at the junction of the head and the body called the penis neck or coronal sulcus.

2. The corpus cavernosum of the penis is a cylindrical body with two tapered ends, one on the left and one on the right, located on the back of the penis. The left and right bodies are tightly connected, extending forward, with the front end tapered and embedded in the depression on the bottom of the glans penis. The rear end of the corpus cavernosum of the penis is separated, called the crus penis, which is attached to the pubic inferior ventral branch and the sciatic branch on both sides respectively. The corpus cavernosum of the urethra is located on the ventral side of the corpus cavernosum of the penis, and the urethra runs through its entire length. The middle part is cylindrical, with the front end bulging into the glans penis and the rear end bulging called the urethral bulb, located in the middle of the two crus penis, fixed on the fascia below the urogenital diaphragm.

Each corpus cavernosum is covered with a thick fibrous membrane, called the cavernous tunica albuginea. The interior of the corpus cavernosum is composed of many cavernous trabeculae and cavities, which are actually sinus spaces connected to blood vessels. When these cavities are filled with blood, the penis becomes thicker and harder and erects; otherwise, it becomes soft. The three corpora cavernosa are covered with superficial and deep penile fascia and skin. The membrane of the penis is thin, soft and stretchable. The skin moves forward to the neck of the penis, forming a double-layer annular fold that wraps around the glans penis, called the foreskin of the penis, which turns back at the neck of the penis to become the skin of the glans penis. The space between the foreskin and the glans penis is called the foreskin cavity. On the midline of the ventral side of the glans penis, the skin fold connecting the foreskin and the external opening of the urethra is called the frenulum. Too long, too tight, or infected foreskin can cause pain during sexual intercourse. In young children, the foreskin is longer and covers the entire glans penis. As the age increases, the foreskin gradually retracts and the foreskin opening expands accordingly.

If the foreskin covers the urethra but can be turned up to expose the external opening of the urethra and the glans penis, it is called prepuce. When the foreskin opening is too small and the foreskin completely covers the glans penis and cannot be turned up, it is called phimosis. In both cases, inflammation is likely to occur due to stimulation from dirt in the foreskin cavity, and it can also become a factor in inducing penile cancer. The excess foreskin should be surgically removed to expose the glans penis.
