Does an enlarged prostate require treatment?

What does prostate hypertrophy mean? Prostate hypertrophy refers to the size of the male prostate exceeding the normal standard value. The normal standard value of the male prostate is 2 cm, 3 cm, and 4 cm. If it exceeds this range, B-ultrasound will report prostate hyperplasia. This type of prostate hyperplasia is not necessarily a problem, because everyone's physical constitution is different, and the size of the prostate is also different.

1. Vigilant observation.

Treatment: Mild prostatic hyperplasia, without symptoms or with very mild symptoms, requires regular examinations and close observation. Once the condition develops, active treatment is required. Symptomatic rehabilitation treatment can be promoted by changing lifestyle, such as reducing fluid intake, regularly performing quantitative fluid intake, and avoiding alcohol and large amounts of coffee.

Disadvantages: It has no therapeutic effect and is only used for symptomatic treatment.

2. Treatment with medication.

Treatment: Hormone drugs or anti-hormones, α-adrenergic hormone blockers, 5α-protein kinase reductase inhibitors, cholesterol degraders and other drugs are mostly used on the market.

Disadvantages: Side effects are large, and it is easy to cause dependence. Long-term use will cause great damage to the cardiovascular system and the human immune system. And because Western medicine has not completely understood the root cause and pathogenesis of prostate hyperplasia, the main purpose of drug treatment is to improve and alleviate symptoms, not to eradicate prostate hyperplasia.

3. Surgical treatment

Treatment: Palliative surgical treatments such as bilateral orchiectomy and transurethral male prostatectomy; open surgical treatments such as supraphalangeal transbladder male prostatectomy, retrophalangeal male prostatectomy, and transperineal male prostatectomy.

Disadvantages: Surgery is risky and expensive. When choosing a surgery, you need to consider factors such as the hospital's outpatient standards, the doctor's surgical skills, and work experience. And surgical removal does not completely remove the prostate tissue. The prostate tissue left in the body is still likely to become diseased.
