What is small intestinal hernia? Is it serious?

Hernia is when an organ or tissue in the human body leaves its normal anatomical position and enters another location through congenital or acquired weak links, damage or porosity. Common hernias include umbilical hernia, direct inguinal hernia, oblique hernia, incisional hernia, surgical hernia, white line hernia, femoral hernia, etc. Abdominal wall hernia is often caused by coughing, sneezing, excessive, abdominal obesity, forceful defecation, pregnancy, excessive crying of children, degenerative changes in the abdominal pressure resistance of the elderly, etc., which lead to increased intra-abdominal pressure.

Drive the scattered internal organs in the abdomen, such as the colon, cecum, greater omentum, bladder, uterus, ovaries, bilateral fallopian tubes, etc., to another location according to the normal or abnormal weak links, damage, and porosity of the human body.

In clinical medicine, the most common type of hernia is the inguinal hernia, where a lump can be seen or touched in the groin and can be restored after lying down. Most babies are discovered by their mothers when changing their diapers, and in older children, it is discovered during bathing. The cause of the lump is increased abdominal pressure, such as sobbing, coughing, defecation, urination, etc. For older children, standing up and exerting abdominal force can also cause the lump to appear in the groin, and some will reach the scrotum or vulva.

The lump is caused by the body organs in the abdomen slipping into the hernia bag. The most common body organs that slip are the colon, so they feel soft to the touch. Other organs such as the intestines, coccyx, and greater omentum may also slip. In women, the uterus and ovaries are more likely to slip, so you can often feel a thumb-sized, hard, and mostly tender lump. Some patients will experience constipation, poor appetite, etc., and may be prone to crying and restlessness.

Inspection

Diagnostic imaging tests such as B-ultrasound and X-ray are helpful for diagnosis.

Healing

1. Conservative therapy

Patients under one year old can temporarily avoid surgical treatment because the disease may resolve spontaneously. A hernia band with deep pressure ring can be used.

2. Surgery

If hernia is not properly treated, the hernia may gradually enlarge, the symptoms may worsen, and even cause incarceration or strangulation, threatening the patient's life. Therefore, surgical treatment should be performed as soon as possible.
