Does smoking affect sperm in men? What are the dangers?

Smoking is a common behavior in life, and for many men, smoking is a way to enhance their charm and show their personality. However, smoking is harmful to the body, because tobacco contains a lot of tar and nicotine, which can easily lead to various diseases in the body. For example, does smoking affect sperm in men? What are the hazards?

Smoking is the natural enemy of sperm

Many men develop the bad habit of smoking since their teenage years and over time, become hardcore smokers, little knowing that this habit can lead to lifelong infertility.

First, smoking can damage male sexual function and cause male infertility. Smoking is one of the common risk factors for male arterial damage, especially arteriosclerosis. After arteriosclerosis, the penile blood pressure index drops significantly, and blood infusion decreases significantly, thus inducing impotence.

Secondly, smoking can directly damage the gonads and sperm. The production of sperm depends on the gonads, mainly the function of the testicles; at the same time, the production of sperm is characterized by rapid proliferation of cell numbers and cell differentiation and maturation. This process requires a large amount of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and protein, and the smoke concentrate of cigarettes contains substances that induce cell aberration and hinder lymphocyte DNA synthesis, which has a significant impact on the occurrence, maturation and proportion of abnormal sperm.

An analysis of more than 5,000 pregnant women found that if their husbands smoked more than 10 cigarettes a day, the prenatal mortality rate of their fetuses would increase significantly; the more they smoked, the higher the mortality rate. The proportion of women whose husbands smoked giving birth to defective children was about 2.5 times higher than those whose husbands did not smoke.

The harm of smoking for women is even greater. The latest scientific research report points out that women who smoke will face the risk of infertility and premature menopause. The research department of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston published a report saying that when women smoke, they inhale a toxin that can cause ovarian failure, which can greatly shorten their reproductive period.
