Examination will reveal ankle joint deformity, obvious tenderness in the medial or lateral malleolus, and bone friction sound.

Diagnostic methods:

X-ray examination should include AP and lateral views of the ankle joint and ankle acupoints.

It is not difficult to diagnose fractures based on the history of trauma, ankle pain, swelling, deformity, and X-ray findings. However, when the ankle joint is injured, a high-position fracture of the fibula neck sometimes occurs, which should be carefully examined to avoid missed diagnosis. For high-position lateral malleolus or fibula fractures, the possibility of tibiofibular joint injury should be evaluated. In addition, it is necessary to check for other associated injuries, such as peripheral ligament injuries, peroneal tendon, Achilles tendon, posterior tibial tendon injuries, talar osteochondrium injuries, nerve and blood vessel injuries, etc.
