Sperm metabolic cycle

Sperm is a relatively important substance in the male body, and it is also the premise for ensuring that men can reproduce normally. Of course, sperm will not stay in the male body forever, but has a certain metabolic process. Generally speaking, the metabolic cycle of sperm is about four months. Therefore, for men who are preparing for pregnancy, they can do some preparations for pregnancy four months in advance or even longer!

1. How long is the metabolic cycle of sperm?

Sperm can survive in the male body for about 120 days. It must stay in the epididymis for 2 to 3 weeks before it can develop into mature sperm with motility and fertilization ability. In other words, if the sperm is not excreted from the body, it normally takes 4 months for the whole metabolism to complete.

2. How is sperm produced?

An adult male can produce 70 to 150 million sperms every day. Sperm are produced in the testicles and take about 10 weeks to mature. They are then stored in the epididymis. The temperature must be 3 to 5 degrees Celsius below body temperature to produce a large number of healthy sperms.

3. Sperm survival time

Although a normal sexually mature man can discharge tens of millions or even up to 200 million sperms in one ejaculation, most of these sperms lose their vitality and die in the acidic environment of the female reproductive tract.

Generally speaking, the life span of sperm in the vagina does not exceed 8 hours, and only a small number of sperm escape and continue to move forward. When the sperm rush up to the uterine cavity, their number is only 1%-5% of that at ejaculation. After passing through various checkpoints, there are only a few sperm that can finally reach the fertilization site in the fallopian tube. However, as long as the sperm enters the fallopian tube, it has a strong fertilization ability. Of course, in the end only 1-2 sperm are lucky enough to combine with the egg, and the rest of the sperm will die within 24-36 hours.

However, the sperm stored in the crypts of the cervical mucosa can live for 2-6 days. Even so, its fertilization ability has been basically lost because the fertilization ability of sperm can only be maintained for about 20 hours.
