What is an epididymectomy?

What is an epididymectomy?

The testicles are part of the male reproductive system, and the testicles are very important to the male reproductive system. Epididymitis is a relatively common male disease. Epididymitis is very harmful to the health of the body. It can also easily affect sexual function, fertility, etc. It can also spread inflammation. Epididymitis resection is a treatment method that is less harmful to the body and has no side effects.

What is an epididymectomy?

Epididymitis surgery is a minor surgery to solve the problem of epididymitis.

Acute epididymitis caused by non-infectious factors may be related to trauma, autoimmune diseases (Behcet's syndrome), and drugs (amiodarone), and is generally not associated with urinary tract infection.

Two causes

1. Infectious factors

1. Pathogens - Acute epididymitis in children under 14 years old is often caused by E. coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. After puberty, in men under 35 years old, acute epididymitis is usually caused by gonococcal and/or Chlamydia trachomatis infection. In gay men, it is often caused by Gram-negative bacteria, such as E. coli and Haemophilus influenzae. The cause of epididymitis in patients over 35 years old is mainly related to urinary tract infection caused by E. coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These patients often have a history of prostate stones, recent urinary tract instrumentation, bladder nerve dysfunction, benign prostatic hyperplasia or chronic bacterial prostatitis. Herpes simplex virus, mumps virus, tuberculosis, Treponema pallidum, etc. can also affect the epididymis.

2. Infection route: The pathogen can invade the epididymis through the lymphatic route, diffusion along the tunica vaginalis, urine reflux or hematogenous spread.

2. Non-infectious factors

Epididymitis symptoms

Clinical manifestations of chronic epididymitis:

Chronic epididymitis is more common. Some patients become chronic because the acute phase is not completely cured, but most patients do not have a clear acute phase. The inflammation is often secondary to chronic prostatitis or injury. Patients often feel dull pain and bloating in the scrotum on the affected side. The pain often extends to the lower abdomen and the ipsilateral inguinal cleft. Sometimes there may be secondary hydrocele. During examination, the epididymis often has varying degrees of enlargement and hardening, with mild tenderness, and the ipsilateral vas deferens may be thickened.

Clinical manifestations of acute epididymitis:

The disease occurs suddenly, with high fever, elevated white blood cells, swelling and pain in the scrotum on the affected side, a feeling of heaviness, pulling pain in the lower abdomen and groin, which worsens when standing or walking. The epididymis on the affected side is enlarged and there is obvious tenderness. When the inflammation is large, both the epididymis and testicles are swollen, and the boundary between the two is unclear, which is called epididymal orchitis. The spermatic cord on the affected side is thickened and there is also tenderness. Generally, acute symptoms can gradually subside after a week.

harm

1. Loss of fertility. Epididymitis can lead to dead sperm, azoospermia, loss of fertility, and transmit inflammatory bacteria to the spouse, causing gynecological diseases and harming the wife.

2. Can cause loss of sexual function. Epididymitis can lead to decreased male sexual function or even complete loss of sexual function, bringing difficulties to the couple's sexual life.

3. Induce dangerous diseases. Epididymitis can easily induce various serious diseases, such as varicocele, phlebitis, prostatitis, endocrine diseases, nephritis and other kidney diseases, urinary tract infections, and in severe cases can lead to malignant tumors, seriously threatening men's lives.

4. Impairment of essence and kidney, and premature aging. If epididymitis is not cured for a long time, it is easy to cause impaired essence and kidney, loss of vitality, chills in the limbs, back pain, and premature aging.

Surgical treatment options

Surgical treatment of epididymitis is divided into two categories: the first category is used in the treatment of acute epididymitis, because the inflammatory mass of acute epididymitis sometimes exceeds the volume of the testicle, and if it is severe, it may lead to testicular necrosis. Generally, acute epididymitis is treated with medication, which can be used orally and intravenously, but the treatment effect is often poor. After acute inflammation, a chronic process will occur, leaving behind symptoms of chronic inflammatory nodules in the epididymis, causing great pain to the patient. If surgical treatment is used, it is to loosen the seminal vesicle sheath and reduce the resulting swelling.
