Male Catheter

Male Catheter

Male catheters are different from female catheters because the urethral interfaces of men and women are different, but the principles are the same. The catheter is made of natural rubber and has been strictly sterilized, so there is no need to worry about local infection. The catheter needs to be inserted before the operation and must be removed after the operation when the body can go to the toilet normally.

What is a urinary catheter?

A urinary catheter is a tube made of natural rubber, silicone rubber or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that can be inserted into the bladder through the urethra to drain urine. After the catheter is inserted into the bladder, there is an air bag near the tip of the catheter to fix the catheter in the bladder and prevent it from coming out. The drainage tube is connected to a urine bag to collect urine.

Steps to Catheterization

Place the bedpan under the patient's buttocks and spread the labia with your hands or retract the foreskin. Use a cotton swab moistened with saline or boiled water to clean the catheter about an inch from the end. Use one cotton swab at a time and discard the dirty cotton swab into the prepared plastic. Check for any scabs or abnormal drainage or discharge.

Observe and record urine color and quantity

(1) Normal: 1500-2000ml/24h Polyuria>2500ml/24h Oliguria<400ml/24h No urine<50ml/24h

(2) Color: Normal: colorless, transparent or light yellow; Abnormal: hematuria, hemoglobinuria, bilirubinuria, chyluria

Clamp the catheter every day and loosen it every 3-4 hours. If the catheter is inserted too shallowly, part of the balloon will be close to the posterior urethra, which may cause urethral bleeding. Therefore, after the urine is seen in the catheter and it is inflated or filled with water for another 4-5cm, the catheter is gently pulled outward until it stops. At this time, the balloon is just at the inner opening of the urethra, which can effectively prevent urethral bleeding or exudation.

Generally, a urinary catheter is inserted before the operation. It is inserted from the urethral opening, which is above the vaginal opening. There is a slight feeling when inserting it, but it is not painful. The catheter is flexible and the urethra is also flexible, so you don't need to be too nervous. Generally, it is expelled 24 hours after the operation. Encourage yourself to get out of bed to urinate. If you still can't urinate by then, you may insert it again.
