How to treat a toe fracture? See 3 options

In clinical practice, the most common fracture is metatarsal fracture, which is often caused by sprain or heavy object hitting the instep. When a fracture occurs, the patient will feel abnormal pain and the entire foot will swell. So, how to treat metatarsal fracture? What are the methods?

1. Avulsion fracture of the base of the fifth metatarsal

Generally, there is no displacement and it can be fixed with tape, bandaged, and if necessary, fixed with a plaster boot (with rubber heel for walking) for about 6 weeks. Other metatarsal base fractures without displacement can also be treated with the same method.

2. Fracture of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th metatarsal neck

If there is displacement, it should be manually reduced and fixed with a short leg plaster, otherwise the deformity will affect walking. If the reduction is unsuccessful, it can be surgically reduced and fixed with steel pins.

3. Marching fracture

Less common, it occurs when walking for a long distance, with fractures of the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal necks or metatarsal shafts, and can also occur in the tibia. Generally, there is no displacement, also known as fatigue fracture. Proper rest is required, and arch support, tape fixation bandage or plaster fixation for about 3 weeks in the early stage can prevent excessive callus formation. Later, arch pads (transverse arch and longitudinal arch pads) can be used to disperse gravity until the symptoms disappear. There are no sequelae after healing. If there is a wound on a toe fracture, the wound should be cleaned to prevent infection. If there is no displacement, local bandage fixation. If there is displacement, manual reduction should be performed to fix the affected toe in a flexed position.
