Sperm is the mature reproductive cell of males. Their development starts from immature spermatogonia. Spermatogonia divide many times and increase in size to become spermatocytes, which divide again to become spermatids, and finally develop into mature spermatozoa, that is, primordial cells-spermatocytes-spermatocytes-spermatozoa.

After sperm matures, it falls into the lumen of the seminiferous tubules and slowly migrates to the epididymis. Some of it is stored there, while most of it migrates to the vas deferens and its ampulla for storage until it is expelled during ejaculation.

During the formation of sperm, a suitable and relatively constant environment is required, and temperature is an important condition for sperm production. This suitable and relatively constant environmental temperature is regulated by the expansion and contraction of the scrotum. When the outside temperature rises, the scrotum expands and expands the heat dissipation area to cool down; conversely, when the outside temperature drops, the scrotum shrinks to keep warm. Through this regulation, the temperature inside the scrotum is kept 1.5-2.0℃ lower than the abdominal cavity.

The production of sperm begins with the regeneration of undifferentiated spermatogonia and the division and proliferation of spermatogonia. After several mitotic divisions, part of the spermatogonia grows into primary spermatocytes, while the other part remains as stem cells. The primary spermatocyte undergoes the first maturation division to form two secondary spermatocytes, which undergo the second maturation division to form two sperm cells. Sperm is a cell with a special morphology, divided into three parts: head, body, and tail. The head participates in fertilization, and the flagella movement of the tail makes the sperm motile. It takes about 11 to 16 days for sperm to be stored and moved in the epididymis, further maturing and having stronger motility. The epididymis provides a favorable environment for the storage of sperm before ejaculation, and accessory gland secretions such as prostatic fluid and seminal vesicle fluid participate in the ejaculation process.
