The dangers of long-term night shift work for men

Everyone should dislike working the night shift. For girls, working the night shift at night may cause them to encounter danger on the way home, or even be robbed. But do you know the adverse effects of men working the night shift for a long time? In fact, working the night shift for a long time is very hard on the body of men, and men who stay up late for a long time are very likely to induce heart disease.

1. Increased risk of heart disease and stroke

A study of 2 million people published in BMJ showed that shift work increases the risk of coronary events by 24%, the risk of heart attack by 23%, and the risk of stroke by 5%. Especially for those who work night shifts, the risk of coronary events is as high as 41%.

2. May cause cancer

As early as 2007, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) listed night shifts as a "possible carcinogenic factor." The main reason is that it disrupts the body's "biological clock."

Researchers at Yale University and the Danish Cancer Society have found that disruptions to the biological clock can affect DNA expression. They even found the same abnormal DNA expression in Danish women who worked long night shifts and developed breast cancer.

In addition, several studies have shown that working night shifts for a long time increases the risk of ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer.

3. Increased risk of death

Several analyses of the American Nurses' Health Study have shown that shift work increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. One analysis involving more than 70,000 people showed that working night shifts for ≥5 years increases the risk of all-cause death by 11%, while working night shifts for 6 to 14 years increases the risk of cardiovascular death by 19%, and working night shifts for ≥15 years increases the risk by 23%.

4. Damage to fertility

A meta-analysis involving 120,000 people reported at the 2013 European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology Annual Meeting (ESHRE 2013) showed that shift work is associated with 80% of fertility problems and 33% of menstrual irregularities, and working night shifts also increases the miscarriage rate by 29%.
