Can testicular torsion heal on its own?

Testicular torsion is an acute disease, and most of the onset is caused by external forces. Some male friends mistakenly believe that testicular torsion will recover on its own, but in fact it is not. If testicular torsion occurs, you should seek medical attention and treatment in time, and do not delay the treatment time.

1. The ischemia after testicular torsion is related to the degree of torsion and duration. The greater the degree of torsion, the more severe the ischemia and the smaller the chance of rescue. According to medical research reports, if the testicles are ischemic for 1 hour, the damage is reversible; if they are ischemic for 5 hours, most testicles can still be saved; if they are ischemic for more than 8 hours, testicular necrosis is inevitable; if they are ischemic for more than 24 hours, the function of the lateral testicle may be lost forever. Testicular torsion is prone to occur during sleep at night or in the early morning. Especially after boys enter puberty, the penis erections increase at night, accompanied by local muscle contraction, which can cause testicular rotation. Boys with potential congenital developmental abnormalities, such as long or absent gubernaculum, high fixed point of spermatic cord, cryptorchidism, or cryptorchidism with oblique hernia, will experience symptoms when the testicles become more active during nocturnal erection and are prone to twisting. Most patients with testicular torsion will suddenly experience swelling and tenderness on one side of the scrotum, thickening of the spermatic cord, and pain that may extend to the lower abdomen, groin, or thigh. Some patients may also experience nausea, vomiting, fever, and difficulty walking.

2. In daily life, many men are careless about testicular torsion and paralysis, and endure the pain again and again, which leads to delayed early treatment. Some men lose their fertility and cause lifelong misfortune.

3. Once testicular torsion occurs, especially in adolescents, the torsion should be immediately relieved and the blood supply to the testicle should be restored to save the testicle and prevent complications. In the early stage of testicular torsion, manual reduction can be used. However, since the testicle is not fixed after manual reduction, it is still possible to twist again, and it is difficult to judge the ischemia of the testicle by manual reduction. Therefore, it is recommended to go to a professional hospital for examination and treatment in time and use surgery. In addition, after treatment, ask the doctor to do a routine semen examination to understand the function of the diseased testicle and the contralateral testicle. This is more important for unmarried young men.

4. Testicular torsion is a sudden and severe disease with severe pain in the testicle and scrotum on the affected side. The pain is limited to the scrotum at the beginning of the torsion, and then spreads to the lower abdomen and perineum, accompanied by vomiting, nausea or fever, redness and tenderness in the genitals. Because the spermatic cord is also twisted, the blood vessels in the spermatic cord are blocked and the testicle lacks blood supply. If not treated in time, the testicle will suffer from ischemic necrosis, turn black, and gradually atrophy and lose function. If lucky, the testicular torsion will return to its original position on its own, but in this case, the testicular torsion will recur, sometimes better and sometimes worse, and it will also bring pain.

5. The key to testicular torsion lies in early diagnosis and early treatment. Therefore, once there is severe pain in the scrotum area, and the pain worsens when you squeeze it with your hands, you should think of the possibility of testicular torsion and never take it lightly. Testicular torsion should be treated with emergency surgery immediately. For torsion within 3-4 hours, the blood supply to the testicle can be restored after the testicle and spermatic cord are repositioned through surgery. On the contrary, if it exceeds 3-4 hours, the necrosis caused by testicular ischemia is difficult to recover even with surgical repositioning, and the non-functional testicle has to be removed.
